How to find out if your home or business has ever been flooded

The terrible flash floods have brought trauma and misery across the UK over the last few days … but it could turn out that your home or business has been flooded before.

If you want to find that out it’s easy to do and it’s free.

You can get the flooding history of a property based on Environment Agency records.

All you need to do is send an email to enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk including:

* The property’s address or a map of the area if the postcode is not known (you can attach a file or link to an online map)

* The period you’d like the report to cover

* Your daytime telephone number

You’ll be sent the report by email within 20 working days.

The report is free unless it takes more than 18 hours to put together. If it takes longer, the Environment Agency will contact you and then may charge.

Homeowners and businesses often don’t realise that councils have no responsibility to provide sandbags if flooding is expected. They must protect themselves and one way to do this is to have FloodSax alternative sandbags which are space-saving to store and easy to deploy. It means you have peace of mind and are ready for action 24/7 to prevent a flood.

Once FloodSax come into contact with water they inflate to weigh 20kg (44lbs) which makes them more effective than traditional sandbags at keeping floodwater out.

More than 2.5 million have now been sold worldwide.
