People who suffer from flooding face a double whammy as it usually leads to a huge rise in their insurance premium on top of all the trauma, misery and damage.

A shocking survey by online price comparison website MoneySuperMarket has revealed that home insurance rises by almost one-fifth after a flood claim … yet this could all be avoided if people took precautions to protect their home.

Many think their local council will come to the rescue with sandbags – but that’s simply not the case.

If people are ready and equipped to keep the water out it would save all the heartache, cost and disruption of dealing with the aftermath of a flood and the prospect of facing a major flood premium price rise.

The MoneySuperMarket survey was based on 1.25 million home insurance quotes in 2018 and company spokesman Tom Flack said: “Our data shows that home insurance premiums jump by almost a fifth after a claim.

“As well as taking basic steps to protect and maintain your home against the elements, if you do live in an area prone to flooding it's important to consider what you can do to minimise the risk of damage to your possessions.

“Claims can also impact your insurance in the long term as it is likely insurers will increase premiums in proven high risk areas. So taking precautions to avoid a claim will not only help keep a lid on your premium, but should also give you cheaper options next time you shop around to renew your policy.”
