A new free directory has just been published giving people all the vital information they need to make their properties flood resistant.
The Property Flood Resilience Directory has been compiled and written by national flood campaigner Mary Dhonau, OBE – known simply as Flood Mary - who often appears on regional and national media talking about the hazards, misery and trauma of flooding.
The publication’s full title is Making Your Home Flood Ready - A Directory of Property Flood Resilience Products and Measures.
Mary, who regularly tours the country in a Floodmobile information van featuring all the latest anti-flood gadgets and inventions, said: “I know from firsthand experience and from talking to thousands of people over the years that being flooded is an absolutely appalling experience.
“To have filthy, stinking flood water violate your home – a place where you should feel safe – is just awful. The long journey to recovery following a flood is incredibly stressful.
“Every time I visit a recently flooded community I hear the same question time and time again: “Where can I find out information about property flood resilience products and where I can get them?’
“Property Flood Resilience may require some investment but it is time and money well spent. PFR can bring real peace of mind, helping you to feel more in control and better prepared should flooding happen again. That’s why I’ve put together this new directory. It’s packed full of useful information to help you better protect your home, plan ahead and recover more quickly if floods return.
“There’s also a dedicated section on planning for a flood, which I believe should be the starting point for everything you do, including a graphic of a house showing all the ways you can protect it from flooding.
“The directory includes simple, low-cost preparedness tips, a Flood To Do list and links to useful resources. It contains details of all the products and not just the company name. I’ve included information of what they do and lots of photos of what the products all look like.”
These include FloodSax alternative sandbags, flood doors, airbrick covers, submersible pumps, non-return valves, flood gates, flood restoration services and also lots of advice on how to protect your home or business from flooding. There is also important information on flood insurance.
Mary added: “I hope it becomes a vital ‘first stop’ for anyone who has been recently flooded or lives at risk of flooding. It’ll be a great resource for those who manage flood risk too.
“This is a living document so I’ll continue updating it as new products, services or specialists become available.
“We can’t always stop the water, but we can help people to feel far more in control. This directory walks people through the process. Do please share the link to my new directory far and wide with your networks or with anyone you know who is worried about their property’s future flood risk.”
Lucy Bailey from Yorkshire-based Environmental Defence Systems Ltd which invented the FloodSax sandless sandbag – the original alternative sandbag with around 3 million sold worldwide – said: “The directory is so easy to read and clearly laid out with hundreds of photos of products and all the information you need about the companies that make them.
“Anyone who lives in an area vulnerable to flooding needs a copy of this directory.”
The directory is available online to be downloaded as a PDF at https://bit.ly/45m0NmQ
Printed copies will also be available from the Floodmobile when Mary is back on the road.
The directory has been brilliantly put together by graphic designer Nigel Long who can be contacted at nigellongdesign@gmail.com
